“Jack, my brother.” I say, clapping my older sibling on the back. “Thanks for stopping by.”

“Hey, no problem. You want a beer?” he asks, summoning Blake to grab him a cold one while I’m taking a break from my set. It’s the only set I’ve worked this week, and it’ll be the last one until next week, since I’m doing a sound check for the wedding tomorrow night, and then the wedding itself the following night. The boys and I practiced yesterday and last night.

“No, not tonight.” I say, knowing Kendra’s stopping by shortly, and she’s coming over to my place when my set is over.

He gives me a look like I’ve just sprouted a third eye. “You sick? Since when do you not want a beer on break?”

“Ah, not in the mood tonight.” I lie. I’m in the mood for something, but it’s not beer.

He lifts a brow. “Okay.” Blake hands him a beer and Jack nods his thanks, throwing a ten dollar bill on the bar. “Did Julia get in touch with you?”

“Yeah,”

“Glad Colton’s coming home. That’s the last of that Afghanistan crap in our lives for good from what I understand.”

“Amen,” I say, “Hey, you see the bitchin’ silk-screening Dave did to the drums?” I point to the stage, where the front of the drum now says, ‘Take Risks’ in red, with an appearance akin to flames.

“Yeah,” Jack hesitates. “Something wrong with you tonight?”

“No, why?”

He shakes his head, and then cranes his neck to the side. “Because that smoking hot blonde just walked by, totally checking you out, and you didn’t even bat an eyelash. Dude, what gives?”

I look at him like he just called me a shithead, “Nothing.”

“Yeah, right.” Jack guffaws.

And then it’s like a beacon. The front door opens, and I see her appear, looking for me. I wave my hand in the air so Kendra can see me at the bar.

Jack smiles. “Ah, there it is.”

“There what is?” I chuckle.

“The reason why you’re acting like you matured ten years overnight. Next thing I know you’re going to be telling me you want to perform at weddings and do a duet with her. Christ.”

I purse my lips together, trying to keep a straight face.

“You’re fucking kidding me.” he says, lowering his beer, shaking his head.

Kendra reaches us. She sees Jack and clams up. Ignoring her stiff stance, I lean in and kiss her full on the mouth…twice. I’d do more if he wasn’t standing right there with his mouth hanging open in shock. “Jack, you remember Kendra.” I say by way of introduction.

“Nice to meet you, again, Jack.” Kendra says, offering him her hand to shake.

He shakes it and smiles with a knowing look. “Kendra. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

She smiles back. “Same here.”

“Lies. All lies.” Jack jokes.

“Wade tells me you’re an accountant?”

“Yeah, CFO for my dad’s airline. But I’m sure you knew that already.”

I can’t stop looking at her. She let her hair out. It’s pooling in loose curls on her shoulders. The red glints under the bar lights.
